wolf & heron: What are your most important values?
Anna Marie Cruz: I always feel like my life is a personal quest, and I always want to be fulfilling my own potential or growing. Owning my personal growth helps me understand what’s important to me, but it’s also a value in itself. Another important one is freedom; it’s a part of growing. Freedom is being able to explore, being able to be nimble. It applies to a lot of aspects of how I cultivate my life. For example, I’m minimalistic. I find that letting go of materialistic things, helps me have freedom.
w&h: If you think into the future, say 10 - 15 years from now, what are you hoping to achieve?
AMC: First of all, I love vision exercises that take yourself out of the present and into the future where limitations are momentarily erased. If I were to sum this up, for me it’s about being of value to humanity. As an immigrant and as someone who has been through a number of transitions and hardship, I want to be of value to people going through similar challenges. These last 4 years I have been working on a vision for a social enterprise empowering indigenous women through market linkages. I know this vision may change but this has kept my activities and exploration focused and clear in the meantime.
w&h: If you have a purpose statement, what is it?
AMC: My mission in life is to overcome my greatest fears, to live my full potential, and be of value to humanity.
w&h: Can you tell us a story about how you've had to be influential?
AMC: I think influence is really about being authentic. The most influential role I played was at Be the Match, an organization that supports patients find a life-saving bone marrow match, usually their last option. I worked with communities and engaged volunteers to donate marrow to a complete stranger. What an ask! If I spoke to someone who was afraid, I didn’t say they weren’t doing their part, I asked them, “What is it you’re scared of and what are ways you’d feel you could help?” My influence isn’t about me forcing my own ideas on someone else... it’s about asking what’s important to them and finding common ground. The power of influence is about connecting and meeting people where they are. In order to do that, you need to listen.
